Seizure Awareness and Preparedness Act to Support Students with Epilepsy Nationwide

Seizure Awareness and Preparedness Act Introduced

Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Representatives Donald Norcross (D-NJ-01), Don Bacon (R-NE-02), Jim Costa (D-CA-21), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA-01), and Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC-AL) introduced the Seizure Awareness and Preparedness Act (S. 5065/H.R. 9635) on September 17, 2024.

The legislation would create a federal grant program for local educational agencies to support students with epilepsy or a seizure disorder. The grant funds must be used to carry out a program in public elementary schools and secondary schools to fund training of school personnel on seizure awareness and preparedness that covers individualized health care plans and individualized emergency health care plans for students who have epilepsy or a seizure disorder. There are also optional uses of the grant funds, such as training school personnel to administer or assist with the administration of seizure medications; training students on seizure awareness and preparedness; and recruiting, hiring, or retaining compliance staff.

Efforts to introduce the bill were led by Paul’s Purple Warriors, and Epilepsy Services of New Jersey, a founding member organizations of Epilepsy Alliance America.
